About
Sonora, CA
Incorporated in 1851,
Sonora is one of the oldest cities in California, and is still referred to
as the "Queen of the Southern Mines." Its reputation as a rough and rowdy
gold rush town has evolved into a vital small and quiet place, home to
4,610 residents, and is the county seat of Tuolumne County. With its
scenic Victorian architecture, and museums visitors can relive the old
gold rush days in what was once the biggest gold rush area in American
history.
Close to Yosemite
National Park and Stanislaus National Forest, there are a variety of
outdoor adventures to enjoy including snow skiing, fishing, hiking, river
rafting, horse riding, and more.
There are wineries to visit, specialty shops and galleries to browse, a
lively cultural scene with live theatre and plenty of annual festivals to
enjoy, and plenty of wonderful restaurants and comfortable lodgings to
choose from.
