About
Prescott, AZ
Prescott is
mile-high retreat nestled in the heart of the largest stand of
Ponderosa Pines in the world. Located in North Central Arizona,
Prescott is just 96 miles northwest of Phoenix; 90 miles southwest
of Flagstaff; and 95 miles from Grand Canyon National Park.
As Arizona’s original territorial capital, Prescott holds a wealth
of history and culture preserved from its earlier territorial
days. Founded in 1864 as a gold mining town, and incorporated into
Arizona in 1881, Prescott was named for the historian, William
Hickling Prescott. This historic destination features over 600
buildings in the National Register of Historic Places, and a number
of beautiful restored Victorian-era homes.
Sitting at an elevation of 5,300 ft, Prescott has a mild four season
climate with summer highs of 88 degrees and winter lows of 50
degrees. Outdoor enthusiasts will find the area a veritable
playground for outdoor activities. The Prescott National Forest
maintains over 450 miles of recreational trails, and the area’s five
lakes provide opportunities for fishing, kayaking and
canoeing. Golfers can test their skills on one of Prescott’s six
public courses.
Be sure to take in an afternoon horse race at the new Yavapai Downs
horse racing and equestrian facility just outside of Prescott Valley
on Highway 89-A. Racing begins Memorial Day Weekend and continues
throughout the summer. In addition to the endless recreational
opportunities, be sure to take advantage of some of the many summer
activities in Prescott and the neighboring communities of Prescott
Valley and Chino Valley.
Prescott’s historic downtown, famous for the notorious Whiskey Row,
now features upscale shopping boutiques, fine dining, old-west
saloons, and the Courthouse Plaza. From hotels and motels to Bed &
Breakfast Inns, there are plenty of lodging facilities to choose
from. Prescott is also a popular art featuring a number of galleries
featuring local, regional and national artists.
Prescott is home of the world's oldest, continuously running rodeo,
and is also known as "Arizona's Christmas City".
