Figure Skaters
Spins, jumps, dance moves and more, figure skating is indeed an art form. For centuries, ice skating was a means of getting from one side of a frozen lake to another, instead of having to trudge around it through snow. Englishman Robert Jones is credited with being the first to "figure skate" in 1772, and skating competitions were born. At first, the style was stiff and formal, until American skater Jackson Haines, now considered the father of modern figure skating, came along in the mid 1860s. His free style and expressive techniques became internationally adopted in Europe and it was not until after his death that the United States adopted his style.
