Another Battle for Gettysburg Visitors to Gettysburg and its surrounding countryside soon realize that the echoes of history extend well beyond the boundaries of Gettysburg National Military Park. The battle took place in and around the town as well as on the land now protected as a national park, making the entire area an astonishing reminder of a time of valor and bloodshed, fear and honor, tragedy and hope for what our nation could become. Unfortunately, the sacred nature of this place is at risk from a proposal to build a gambling casino on land within cannon range of the park. Businessman David LeVan wants to establish a “resort” casino just 1/2 mile from the southern border of the Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, PA. This casino would be on the property of Eisenhower Inn and Conference Center on the historic Emmitsburg Rd. (old business route 15) – the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, which cuts directly through Pickett’s charge. This predatory business just doesn’t fit in this location. Gettysburg is America’s most beloved small town, the site of what some historians consider the most important battle of American history. People visit here because they can relax in a family friendly community - not a “casino town”. Photo by Scott Kirkwood, courtesy of NPCA
