About Dinuba, California
The gateway to the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National
Parks, Dinuba is located in the San Joaquin Valley
in Central California. Set just off US Hwy. 99,
Dinuba is only 200 miles from the metropolises of
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the Monterey
Peninsula; and only 20 miles from Fresno. Passing
wineries, farms and agricultural districts, it’s a
scenic and easy 40 minute drive to the Sequoia and
Kings Canyon National Parks. The area is home to
Mount Whitney - the tallest mountain peak in the
continental US; the General Sherman Tree - the
world’s largest tree; the Sequoia National Forest;
the deepest canyon in North America, the ‘Trail of
100 Giants’ and more. Though the area does have
average annual temperature of 63 degrees, the
weather does fluctuate to have warm summers and cool
damp winters – the ideal weather for agriculture.
From May through September the area is bustling with
the harvest of a variety of peaches, plums,
nectarines, grapes, and apricots. August through
October is harvest time for a variety of grapes and
raisins. The Dinuba area also produces two types of
oranges and lemons, plus almonds.
Ollie Wilson and his family are said to be the first
to settle in the Dinuba area. Ollie had a successful
homestead and in 1876, he was one of the first to
plant citrus in the San Joaquin Valley. Wheat was a
major crop for the area, but in the 1890’s Thompson
seedless grapes were planted in the region to make
raisins, later resulting in becoming the new gold of
Dinuba. To date Dinuba celebrates their raisin
producing heritage with their Annual Raisin Parade
and Festival. With a successful variety of crops and
livestock being raised in the region, more families
and commerce moved to Dinuba, creating a diverse
community. The first Koreans to come to the country
landed in Dinuba in 1903, and lived in Chinatown.
The town’s rich agricultural and cultural heritage
is kept alive its landmark statue ‘The Bountiful
Hand’, and the Alta District Historical Society who
operates the Depot Museum, the Evelyn Dopkins Corr
Library, exhibit galleries, a Blacksmith Shop and
the historical White House building.
Today Dinuba is home to over 21,000 residents. Its
highest recommendation comes from the community’s
way of life where people still feel like neighbors,
taking pride in keeping their small-town traditions
and values. The crime rate is low and involvement in
community projects is high. The streets are clean
and the homes well kept. The community is also
growing in economic industry and is has a number of
commercial centers such as Ruiz Foods, Inc. which is
the largest frozen Mexican food manufacturing
company in the US, the Best Buy Distribution Center,
Odwalla, Patterson Dental Supply Western
Distribution Center, and automobile dealerships. In
regards to education, Dinuba has strong schools and
also has a Vocational Center which is a two-story
facility that is part of a 3.8 acre campus. The
Center provides businesses with a resource for
hiring employees for positions that are difficult to
fill; it works with individuals by providing
vocational training and specialized skills; and
provides businesses with a resource for providing
training to existing employees. The Adult School
and Reedley College provide various medical career
programs at the Center. The Center also provides
manufacturing mechanic classes.
Dinuba has excellent parks and recreational
facilities including the Ridge Creek Golf Club, an
18-hole championship golf course. This 7,495-yard
championship golf course was designed by John
Fought, who is known for designing some of the top
golf courses in the world. The course features the
largest driving range west of the Rockies, and on
the back nine the fifteenth hole might be the
longest par five in the state of California at 653
yards.
Dinuba’s quaint downtown district features regular
events as does the Entertainment Plaza where summer
concerts and family events, cruise nights, and an
Annual Car Show are held. Other Dinuba annual events
include the Spring Fling, Cinco de Mayo, Raisin
Parade & Festival, Fall Harvest Fling, and the
Dinuba Christmas Light Parade.
