Dental Care For All Ages by Dr. Eduardo Castro-Ruiz

Change your toothbrush every 3 months. Oral B is a good brand and #60 works well for adults. Electric toothbrushes also work well.

Ideally, it is good to brush and floss three times a day - basically, after every meal. It is especially important to brush and floss at night to remove all the food debris created throughout the day.

When you brush your teeth, don’t forget to brush your tongue and the inside of your cheeks. This will create better breath as it will reduce mucus and change your saliva - new saliva smells better. A healthy tongue is pink in color - not yellow. You may consider purchasing a tongue scraper.

For times when you are unable to brush your teeth after a meal, like after dining in a restaurant - chew on a piece of parsley or an orange slice to help absorb strong odors and give you fresh breath. Some restaurants garnish your plate with parsley or an orange slice just for this reason. Other fibrous fruits and vegetables such as carrots or apples also work.

If you have constant bad breath and you are trying to hide it with mouthwash - stop. Mouthwash only works for a few minutes for special and certain cases. Constant bad breath is a symptom of decay and a sign for you to visit your dentist.

Visit your dentist every 6 months for a checkup and to have your teeth cleaned. It is good to catch decay early. A little speck of a cavity is a simple and painless procedure and when ignored, can develop into more complicated treatments that could have been avoided. On a last note, do not be afraid to ask your dentist questions about your dental health or seek second opinions. Ultimately, other than fate and genetics, you are the only one who can control your health.
