Swallowtail became the state mascot and
butterfly in 1989. The legislation was
requested
by the Selma City Council. Selma is designated
as the Butterfly Capital of Alabama and the
Eastern
Swallowtail is its mascot.

Flag: A crimson St. Andrew's cross on a
white field, patterned after the Confederate
Battle Flag, and adopted in 1895. Alabama became
a Territory Territory by Act of March 3, 1817,
effective Aug. 15, 1817.Alabama was made a state
on Dec. 14, 1819 and is our 22nd state
Origin of state's name: Means "tribal town,
campsite or clearing" in the Creek/Muskogean
Indian language.
It became used as a name for
one of the major tribes in the area, The alabama
or Alabamee Indians.
Highest Point: Cheaha Mountain; 2,407 feet
